That went surprisingly well…
I just moved my server’s hard drive back to the original computer, with a new motherboard. Frustratingly, I couldn’t just plug it in and fire it up as I originally hoped - the different hardware/CPU on Jeff’s computer, where my drive has been living for the past month, was different enough that I needed to re-install Linux.
AGAIN. I just did that a month ago when I first MOVED the disk over to Jeff’s computer, though at that time the boot sector also seemed to be fried courtesy of whatever went wrong with my motherboard in the first place.
I think I set a record today, though. In 2.5 hours, I moved the disk, installed Red Hat, got all the services reconfigured and up and running (ok, I can cheat there by copying over lots of configuration files from my pre-move backup), re-populated the mysql database, debugged all kinds of random user/permissions problems with mailman and gallery, and even remembered to save all my commands in a text file so that next time it’s even faster and easier.
Feel free to burst my happy bubble by pointing out anything that’s broken, of course.
